We remember the Yankees of the mid-1960s as an old team, but oddly that isn't rllaey true. The average age of the team was 28.2, which is 4-1/2 years younger than the current Yankees and more than a year younger than this year's version of the Tampa Bay Rays. In 1964, Roger Maris was 29, two years younger than Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson are today, and the same age as Russell Martin and Robbie Cano. In 1964 Mickey Mantle was the same age as Mark Teixeira! The oldest regular on the '64 Yankees, Elston Howard, was younger than Jeter, A-Rod and Ibanez, the same age as Andrew Jones, and just a year older than Eric Chavez. On the pitching side, Whitey Ford was younger in 1964 than Hiroki Kuroda, and excepting Ford, CC is older today than anyone on the 1964 staff with the exception of Ford and Bud Daley. It's odd how quickly the Yankees on the 1964 team disappeared from baseball. 1964 was the last year Maris hit more than 13 home runs in a season; he retired at age 33. Jim Bouton retired at age 31 (then came back to pitch 29 innings for Atlanta at age 39). Ralph Terry pitched fewer than 100 innings after age 29. Richardson and Tresh retired at age 30, Kubek at 29 Pepitone was gone after age 32, Even Stottlemyre himself was gone from baseball by age 32. Obviously, there were varying reasons for these retirements, including injuries.
